The Carbon County Office of Emergency Management is supplying emergency survival kits to Carbon County senior citizens.

Emergency Manager Lenny Layman is working to ensure older Carbon County residents are prepared for an eventual emergency. On September 21st, at the request of Hanna Senior Center Manager Debbie Schasteen, Layman held the first ever Emergency Preparedness Meeting. Taking place in the Hanna Recreation Center, Layman, and a selection of the county’s first responders, presented attendees with information about how to prepare for potential emergencies, such as fires or winter storms.

Speaking to the Board of Carbon County Commissioners yesterday, Layman said last month’s event was surprisingly well attended.

The main takeaway from the preparedness meeting was the need to have enough supplies to survive in your home, without assistance, for at least two weeks.

Layman said he’s been working with the state to procure 96 five-gallon buckets. The emergency manager said the buckets contain supplies to help Carbon County seniors prepare for an emergency.

Speaking at yesterday’s county commissioners meeting, Layman said he will receive the buckets today. The emergency manager said he and Carbon County Senior Services staff will distribute the buckets to the county’s other senior centers. Layman said while the buckets are being handed out, he’ll perform a shortened version of the presentation he gave at the Hanna rec center.

During his September 21st presentation in Hanna, Layman urged all Carbon County residents to sign up for the county-wide Alert Sense emergency warning program. Participants in the Alert Sense program can choose to receive emails or text messages about potential emergencies within the county. Layman said signing up for Alert Sense will give people more time to prepare for an emergency.

We’ll have the link to the Carbon County Alert Sense emergency warning program website when this story is posted to the Bigfoot99 website later today.
