Carbon County School District Two BOCES is hosting an adult robotics class next month.

Registration has begun for the CCSD #2 Board of Cooperative Educational Services computer programming class titled Robotics… An Autonomous Vehicle Build. Beginning in early November, instructor David Urasky will use an Elegoo Smart Robot Car Kit to teach students how to program and operate an autonomous robot. Urasky said the course will cover the fundamentals of robotic programming.

Urasky has been a teacher for 35 years. He spent 10 years teaching computer aided design at Carbon County Higher Education Center in Rawlins. Urasky said he has two decades of experience working with computer control systems. The goal of the class, Urasky said, is to expand interest in robotics in our area.

Urasky said the Elegoo kits are easy to assemble and come preinstalled with several computer programs. Urasky said he’ll use the autonomous robots to teach students exactly how the various sensors and programs function. The instructor said his course will act as a steppingstone toward solving real-world problems using robotics.

Urasky gave an example of how knowledge of robotics helped him accomplish a practical task. When he could not find a specific remote door lock he needed, Urasky said he programmed his own.

Urasky said his robotics class is aimed at adults with limited to no computer programming skills. However, the robotics instructor said students will need to have a basic understanding of how to use a computer.

Urasky said participants will assemble the Elegoo robot kits during the first class. He said it will take roughly a month and a half to complete his robotics course.

Urasky said he wants his students to have fun while learning about computer programming.

The Carbon County School District Two BOCES course: Robotics… An Autonomous Vehicle Build will meet at the Platte Valley Community Center every Tuesday and Thursday evening. Classes will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 pm from November 7th until December 21st. Registration ends next Sunday, October 15th. The entire course costs $190 to attend. The Elegoo Smart Robot Car Kit purchase price is included in the registration fee.
