The Wyoming Cowboys football team is gearing up for a big game Saturday night under the lights inside the War against the 25th-ranked team in the country, Fresno State.

The 4-and-1 Cowboys are coming off the conference opening win over New Mexico on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium. Lobos Head Coach Danny Gonzales said yesterday that the Cowboys are a good football team.

Wyoming moves onto face nationally-ranked Fresno State in a Saturday night primetime Mountain West matchup that promises to be a slugfest under the lights on national prime-time television.

Fresno State Head football coach Jeff Tedford is made from the same old-school cloth as his Wyoming counterpart Craig Bohl is. Tedford said at Tuesday’s news conference that the prime-time TV spot doesn’t matter as much as who this week’s opponent is.

Wyoming is 5-and-8 against the Bulldogs going back to their first contest in 1992. The Cowboys are 1-and-5 going back to 2016. Wyoming beat Fresno State 45-17 at the War in 2017. The Cowboys have lost to the Bulldogs in each of the last two years, including the 17-0 shutout loss at the War in 2021.

Wyoming has only scored 10 points against Fresno State in the last four games. Coach Tedford just shrugged off the record book and said Wyoming is a tough, well-coached football team.

Fresno State began the season by defeating Purdue on the road 39-35.  In Week Two, the Bulldogs pulled out a double overtime win over Eastern Washington 34-31. The road was easy after that. The Bulldogs shut-out Arizona State 29-0, then beat Kent State at home 53-10. In their conference opener last week, Fresno State beat Nevada 27-9 at home last weekend.

Wyoming comes into Saturday night’s matchup with revenge in mind for last year’s 35-0 shutout loss in primetime the Friday after Thanksgiving.

The Bulldogs moved on to beat Boise State in the Mountain West Championship game. Both Wyoming and San Jose State were 7-4 going into last year’s regular season finale.

The Cowboys likely have revenge in mind as they prepare for Saturday night’s primetime matchup on national television.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. in what promises to be an electrified War Memorial Stadium.
