More information has been released about Monday’s fatal crash on Highway 30.

58-year-old Saratoga resident Brian Detterer was killed at the scene according to an updated statement from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

The crash involving Detterer’s unloaded semi and a pickup truck occurred roughly six miles east of Walcott Junction on Monday at approximately 1:07 in the afternoon.

Troopers from the Wyoming Highway Patrol responded to a head-on collision with injuries at milepost 239 on US 30.

Highway Patrol troopers determined that the driver of the pickup, 70-year-old Hanna resident, Rickey Bales, was headed eastbound in a 1997 Toyota Tacoma. Troopers say Bales crossed the center line and struck a commercial vehicle driving in the opposite direction.

The westbound vehicle, a 2001 Peterbilt 378, was driven by Detterer. The semi-truck is owned by Saratoga-based aggregate contractor, Plattoga Holdings LLC.

The force of the collision destroyed the left tires of the Tacoma, causing the pickup to spin several times and strike a guardrail.  The left front tire of the Peterbilt was damaged in the crash.

Unable to steer, Detterer’s truck veered to the left and smashed through a guardrail. The truck then traveled down an embankment and rolled over.

Despite wearing his seatbelt, Detterer was partially ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Bales, who was also wearing his seatbelt, was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbon County with minor injuries.

Troopers cited Bales for Failing to Maintain a single lane of travel.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol thanked its first responder partners for their assistance on this event.
