An Encampment-based fishing and conservation group is hosting its eighth annual disc golf tournament this summer.

On Saturday, June 8th, Mother Mountain Anglers is putting on the 8th Annual Tale of Two Cities disc golf tournament. Mother Mountain Anglers President Josh Craig described the event.

Roughly ten years ago, the Riverside town council funded the creation of a disc golf course at Rick Martin Memorial Park. Mother Mountain Anglers created the layout for the course and provided the labor to install nine disc golf baskets at the park.

After constructing the disc golf course in Riverside, Craig petitioned the Encampment town council to allow his organization to install a nine-hole course in Grandview Park, next to the Grand Encampment Museum. Craig said the Tale of Two Cities disc golf tournament was created as a way to promote the two courses and the Platte Valley as a whole.

Disc golf, like traditional golf, involves reaching the hole, or in this case basket, in as few attempts as possible. The Tale of Two Cities disc golf tournament will follow the same rules as a regular disc golf game, with one exception. After playing the 18 traditional courses located in the Encampment and Riverside parks, Craig said contestants will have to navigate nine specially created holes with additional obstacles, called the Stage Stop.

Craig said every year, the disc golf tournament typically draws between 50 and 60 players from around the country.

Participation in the Tale of Two Cities disc golf tournament is $50 per player. Craig said participants will also receive additional benefits as part of their registration fee.

Craig recommended players bring their own discs to the tournament. However, Mother Mountain Anglers will have a few discs available to lend to people who want to try disc golf before investing in their own equipment.

The Tale of Two Cities disc golf tournament is divided into two different divisions based on skill. Craig said prizes will be awarded to the top three players in each division. The Mother Mountain Anglers president also said the worst player of the day will receive a special prize.

Immediately after the Tale of Two Cities disc golf tournament, Mother Mountain Anglers will host an outdoor concert. Craig invited the entire community to attend the music event.

Mother Mountain Anglers uses the money raised through its annual disc golf tournament to put on outdoor educational and safety classes throughout the year.

Craig said this Saturday, May 11th, his organization is holding a fundraiser ball to help the Town of Encampment pay for its Fourth of July fireworks display.

The 2024 Fireworks Ball hosted by Mother Mountain Anglers is this Saturday, May 11th, in the Encampment Opera House. Doors open at 7:00pm. Admission is $10 a person. Craig said his organization is also raffling off a shotgun to support the town.

The 8th Annual Tale of Two Cities disc golf tournament is Saturday, June 8th. Registration begins at 8:00am.
