The downtown Rawlins lighting project will take a little longer than expected, says DDA Mainstreet Director.

Last month, Bigfoot99 reported on the LED lighting project the Rawlins Downtown Development Authority Mainstreet is working on. The project entails installing color-changing LED lights to all city-owned light poles in the downtown Rawlins shopping district. At the time, DDA Mainstreet Director Pam Thayer said the lights would likely be ready by Black Friday.

During the November 7th Rawlins city council meeting, Thayer said the LED light unveiling was delayed until December 6th.

Thayer said Wyoming Department of Transportation has given the city written authorization to install the lights on poles along the Interstate 80 Business Loop. Thayer said WYDOT stipulated that all the color-changing LED lights within a certain distance of any traffic signals must always remain white. The DDA Mainstreet director said the lights needed to be rewired to meet WYDOT’s demand.

Thayer said rewiring the lighting circuits caused the delay of a week-and-a-half.

In October, Thayer told Bigfoot99 that the next phase of the Rawlins Downtown Lighting Project was to hang strings of overhead lights along the city’s intersections. Thayer said she modeled her idea after Cheyenne’s 17th Street Lighting Project, where the capital city hung similar lights above its downtown intersections.

During the November 7th Rawlins city council meeting, Mayor Terry Weickum said he was in Cheyenne and saw the 17th Street lights. Mayor Weickum said Vice Mayor Steve Sanger called his attention to the lights. The mayor said he is eager to see something similar in Rawlins.

The new downtown Rawlins color-changing LED lights will be unveiled during the Starlight Parade on December 6th.
