More details have emerged about an alleged assault involving a handgun after the Christmas parade in Saratoga Saturday night.

Police chief Ken Lehr said following a verbal altercation, a Saratoga man was assaulted in the parking lot of the Platte Valley Community Center by another man holding a pistol. Chief Lehr said the handgun wasn’t discharged but the unnamed perpetrator used the gun to beat the victim.

The incident was reported to police who stopped the suspect’s vehicle traveling north from Saratoga on Highay 130. Two men were in the vehicle, one from Rawlins and the other from Saratoga. The Rawlins man, who is suspected of committing the assault, was arrested.

Chief Lehr declined to provide the suspect’s name due to the ongoing investigation. An official police report has not been released. The police chief said the suspect would likely face aggravated assault charges. Lehr said, in his opinion, the gun was not fired during the incident and likely has not been fired at all recently.

The victim was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbon County. A relative of the victim said the man was treated for a concussion and other injuries sustained during the attack.

The relative, who spoke to Bigfoot 99 Monday on the condition anonymity, said the gun discharged during the attack. When asked again Wednesday about the incident in light of Chief Lehr’s comments, the individual said the victim stood by the allegation that a shot was fired.

Calls to the Carbon County Jail yielded no new details about the suspect.
