Heading into their 34th year, the Rawlins Family Recreation Center held their inaugural skating event over the weekend.

Last Friday and Sunday, the rec center’s newly refinished gymnasium was transformed into a skating rink. Over 400 people in total took advantage of the free event to strut their stuff on the hardwood.

Randy Flemig is the recreation supervisor at the recreation center. Flemig said they ran out of some sizes of skates, which did not come as a surprise. More skates are on the way.

Last weekend’s skating was a trial run, of sorts. While generally pleased, Flemig acknowledged there were some things that could be improved.

The event seemed to be a big hit. Despite the fact that some people had to wait for certain size skates, Flemig said there were no complaints.

Flemig and the rec center staff are looking forward to having more skating days.
This week also marks the Rawlins Family Recreation Center’s Almost 35th Birthday Party. All week long, there will be daily drawings for $30 gift cards to local business.

On Monday, the rec center was offering people who visited for 5 consecutive days during their birthday week a $10 gift card for coffee. Patti Hays, the superintendent of recreation, explained the offer in more detail.

Monday also kicked off the rec center’s 100 Mile Club. Participants have to walk or run 100 miles at the center. Rewards will be handed out every 25 miles. At 25, people get a water bottle. Fifty miles awards a string backpack. Seventy-five is a commemorative key-ring. A t-shirt awaits those who make it all the way to 100 miles. Hays said it doesn’t matter how long it takes someone to finish. They’ll still receive their rewards.

Tuesday (today) is Kids Day. The tots gym is free and there will be special crafts for the little ones.

Wednesday, October 19th, is Wellness Wednesday. Recreation Superintendent Hays talked about the community groups involved.

Thursday is Thirsty Thursday. Everyone who attends the rec center will get a free bottle of water or a sports drink.

The festivities culminate on Friday. Hays said food and snacks will be available for everybody.

Not every special offer is set to a specific day. Monthly memberships are buy 12, get one month free all week long. Hays said there were other discounts too.

The entire week is filled with activities at the Rawlins Family Recreation Center for their “Almost 35th Birthday Party.”
