The public is invited to two 9/11 remembrance events in Rawlins.
This Friday, September 11th, marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which claimed the lives of 2,977 innocent people at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon, and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Every year since, Rawlins resident Tink Day has worked to ensure the tragedy is never forgotten. Speaking to Toga Radio, Day said an entire generation has grown up in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and the multiple wars that followed.
Since the first anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Day has brought people together to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, which she said few adults do on a regular basis.
This Friday, Day will host a 9/11 remembrance ceremony on the south lawn of the Carbon County Courthouse. Along with reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, Day said local first responders will be invited to speak, adding that they work hard to protect the people of Carbon County.
The following day, Saturday, September 12th, Day will host a 9/11 memorial stair climb and 5K at the Carbon County Fairgrounds. She said participants will climb the fairground’s grandstand steps 14 times to represent the 110 floors of the World Trade Center buildings. Day encouraged participants and spectators to remember the sacrifice fire fighters made 25 years ago.
Each participant will receive a lanyard with a picture and short biography of a first responder who died in the terrorist attacks. Day said the information will help people better understand the sacrifice they made.
In addition to the biographical lanyards, participants will also receive a commemorative t-shirt.
Registration for the 9/11 memorial stair climb and 5K is $30 per person for the general public and $25 for first responders. While the online registration is now closed, Day said people may still sign up on the day.
Day added that individuals who register on the day of the event will not receive a commemorative shirt.
Proceeds from the 9/11 stair climb will go to Will’s Warriors, a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to current and former first responders and their families.
Tink Day’s 9/11 tribute begins at 5:30 p.m. this Friday, September 11th, on the south lawn of the Carbon County Courthouse, located at 415 West Buffalo Street in Rawlins. The next day, September 12th, Day will host the memorial stair climb and 5K at the Carbon County Fairgrounds at 683 Harshman Street. The event begins at 10:00 a.m.
