The Rawlins Police Department will work with the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation on internet‑related crimes against children.

During Tuesday evening’s Rawlins City Council meeting, Police Chief Mike Ward presented a memorandum of understanding between his department and the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation. Chief Ward explained that the agreement will allow a Rawlins police detective to support the state’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and respond to ICAC cases under Wyoming DCI’s jurisdiction.

Wyoming DCI’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force is responsible for investigating internet‑related offenses and prosecuting those involved.

Chief Ward said the Rawlins Police Department would prefer to take the lead when dealing with local offenses. While the assigned detective may be asked to assist on ICAC work elsewhere in the state, the police chief said he would spend most of his time investigating cases in Rawlins.

Councilman Steve Sanger asked how Wyoming DCI will reimburse the Rawlins Police Department. Chief Ward said the state agency will cover overtime and training costs and purchase any specialized equipment the detective may need.

Chief Ward did not name the detective selected to work with DCI, saying only that he had assisted the agency in the past while serving with another police department. The chief added that if the assigned detective were to leave the department, another officer could be assigned to the task force without revising the agreement.

The City Council unanimously approved the memorandum of understanding between the Rawlins Police Department and Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation for a detective to join the state’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
