Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers used spike strips to stop a fleeing drug suspect.

At 8:15 Saturday morning, a Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper initiated a traffic stop for speeding on Interstate 80 west of Wamsutter. The suspect, driving a white eighth generation Honda Civic, refused to comply and a police chase began.

According to a Highway Patrol social media post, speeds exceeded 130 miles an hour as the suspect fled eastbound on I80. Roughly four miles west of Rawlins, at mile marker 207, troopers successfully deployed a spike strip. The suspect drove another three miles before coming to a stop after his right passenger tire blew off the rim.

The driver, a 21-year-old male from Honduras was taken into custody without further incident. Troopers also found a minor female inside the vehicle, who was taken into protective custody by the Wyoming Department of Family Services.

A search of the vehicle yielded what troopers described as “a large amount of drugs including fentanyl pills, methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and other drug paraphernalia.”

The unnamed driver was charged with felony drug possession, felony possession with intent to deliver, felony interference with child custody, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, fleeing and eluding, and operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license. The Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation and Homeland Security Investigations are assisting with the case.
