The county clerk outlined the steps to become a candidate for the state, county, and municipal positions up for election this year.
Here in Wyoming, candidate filing for the 2026 election opened on May 14th and closes on May 29th. County Clerk Lisa Smith explained that most elected positions in the county are on the ballot.
All state offices are also on the ballot this year, including the governor. Clerk Smith said that in Carbon County, the state positions held by Representatives Bob Davis and Pam Thayer are up for election, along with Senator Larry Hicks’s seat.
Carbon County municipalities will hold elections for mayor and at least two council members. Clerk Smith said a large share of elected offices are up this year, with additional races coming in November.
Clerk Smith said most county positions do not require prior experience, with the attorney and assessor as the exceptions. She said the attorney must hold a law license and the assessor must own property in the county.
Clerk Smith said to file for county office, a candidate must submit their paperwork to the county clerk’s office with a $100 processing fee. For municipal races, Smith said candidates file at their respective town halls and pay $25.
To run for a state seat, a candidate must file with the Secretary of State’s office.
The Carbon County Clerk’s Office posts a list of candidates online. As of this report, Travis Moore and John Johnson are the only declared candidates for county commissioner. Both are seeking reelection. The county assessor, attorney, clerk, clerk of district court, coroner, sheriff, and treasurer each have a single candidate – the incumbant.
At this time, the majority of candidates are current officeholders running again. Elk Mountain Mayor Morgan Irene is seeking reelection, as is Hanna Mayor Charlie George. No other municipality has a mayoral candidate as of this report.
Clerk Smith said the county also provides a list of all open positions and ballot measures appearing in November.
Clerk Smith urged anyone interested in running for elected office to file as a candidate. In addition, the county clerk said residents can register to vote at any time, not just during the upcoming elections.
All candidate applications must be submitted to their respective offices before the end of day on May 29th. A link to the county’s website, including candidate filing forms for county, municipal, and special district races, will be included in this story on Bigfoot99.com.
The 2026 primary elections will be held on August 18th.
