Sheriff Bakken is hosting a self-defense and gun safety course next month.

On Saturday, August 19th, at the Carbon County Higher Education Center, Sheriff Alex Bakken will hold a self-defense and concealed carry class. Sheriff Bakken said he was approached by representatives from the Higher Education Center last year to teach a safety class. The sheriff said he thought it was a great idea.

Here in Wyoming, residents over the age of 18 can legally open carry a firearm without a permit. Residents 21 or older may conceal carry, also without a permit.

Sheriff Bakken said he won’t provide martial arts training at the self-defense classes. The sheriff said the purpose of the course is to teach people how to identify and deal with potential threats.

Sheriff Bakken said the concealed carry portion of the course will begin with a discussion on the Wyoming state law governing concealed carry, 6-8-104. The sheriff said students will work on familiarizing themselves with the weapons and equipment. Sheriff Bakken said the class will go over the things you should bear in mind before deciding to conceal carry a firearm. Afterwards, the sheriff said everyone will go to the Rawlins Outdoor Shooting Complex to put his teachings into action.

While Wyoming doesn’t require a permit to conceal carry, Sheriff Bakken said other states do. Wyoming residents are able to obtain a concealed carry permit through the state. The sheriff said a Wyoming concealed carry permit allows people to legally conceal carry in the states that recognize the permit. Sheriff Bakken said his course will cover the topic.

Sheriff Bakken said the class could be used to meet one of the requirements to obtain a Wyoming concealed carry permit. The sheriff said an applicant must have a certain amount of training, which he can provide.

The Self-Defense and Conceal and Carry class with Sheriff Alex Bakken is Saturday, August 19th, at the Carbon County Higher Education Center in Rawlins. The self-defense portion of the class begins at 8:00am and is open to all ages. Afterwards, from 10:00am to 12:00pm, the class will move to the Rawlins Outdoor Shooting Complex for the concealed carry part of the course. The live fire training is restricted to people 21 and older. Together, the classes cost $15 to attend. Guns and ammo will be provided.
