A Wyoming State Trooper safely apprehended a vehicle driven by a homicide suspect from Colorado on Interstate 80 in Laramie County, utilizing a specialized vehicle-stopping system. The incident, which resulted in minor injuries to a trooper, highlights the close collaboration between Wyoming law enforcement agencies.

At approximately 5:25 Friday morning, Wyoming State Troopers received an alert regarding a homicide suspect traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 from Colorado. Troopers and Laramie County Deputies mobilized to intercept the vehicle.
A specialized Wyoming Highway Patrol unit, equipped with a Grappler police pursuit system device designed to safely stop fleeing vehicles using a netting system was deployed.

The device involves a police chase car maneuvering close enough behind the suspect’s vehicle to deploy a netting device that wraps around the rear wheel of the fleeing vehicle. The netting then pulls tight, stopping forward motion.

The device was invented by a roofer with zero law enforcement experience.

In Friday’s incident outside Cheyenne, a Wyoming Trooper caught up to the suspect’s vehicle near mile marker 367 and deployed the Grappler.

Both vehicles subsequently entered the median and the patrol vehicle rolled during the maneuver. The Trooper sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released. Laramie County Sheriff’s Office deputies took the suspect into custody.

This incident is a powerful example of the strong partnerships among Wyoming’s law enforcement agencies, said WHP Colonel Tim Cameron. Our Troopers responded in a supporting role with precision and courage. I am proud of their actions and grateful that there were no serious injuries.

Cameron thanked all participating agencies for their coordination and steadfast commitment to community safety.
