Travelers through Carbon County on Interstate 80 today should be aware that the Wagonhound Rest Area at Exit 267 will be closed today for repairs.

The closure starts at 8:00 a.m.

The exit to Wagonhound is located twelve miles west of Elk Mountain. Wyoming Department of Transportation Public Relations Specialist Andrea Staley said the entire rest area will be inaccessible as old utility poles are replaced. Staley said the rest area is expected to reopen tomorrow.

Staley said Carbon Power and Light crews are replacing out-of-date utility poles at the location. The WYDOT public relations specialist said because power will be out while the work is underway, the entire rest area must be closed.

Staley said WYDOT construction crews are attempting to finish all the scheduled road work before the beginning of winter. The public relations specialist said repairs to the Fort Steele rest area are almost done. Staley said WYDOT crews are waiting for a part to arrive before the project can be finished.

In April, WYDOT crews began work on Highway 789 outside of Baggs. Staley said the project is finishing up. The public relations specialist said all the scheduled work should be completed before winter arrives this year.

To mark the close of the 2023 construction season, WYDOT is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the I-80 Quealy Dome truck parking area, east of Laramie. Stay tuned to Bigfoot99 for more information about the September 20th event.
