Be aware if you’re headed to Cheyenne for any reason, the capital city has been dealing with high numbers of West Nile virus-infected mosquitoes over the past few weeks.

Infected mosquitoes have been collected throughout Cheyenne and Laramie County. The city’s Weed and Pest Division asks that you take precautions to protect yourself from insect-borne diseases this summer.

The suggestions are typical, and can be employed anywhere.

Avoid spending time outside at dawn and dusk when the biting bugs are active.

Wear shoes, socks, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods or when mosquitoes are most active. Clothing should be light-colored and tightly woven.

Avoid standing water, a key breeding ground for mosquitoes.

For additional protection, use an insect repellent containing DEET.
