This year’s Wyoming Cowboy football team is older and more seasoned than the young, untested squad that performed at a higher level than anyone expected last year.

Now ten years into the head coaching job at Laramie, head coach Craig Bohl sounded like a seasoned veteran at sizing up a team on the first day of practice. Bohl said he’s pleased with the Cowboy team that he’ll field against Texas Tech in four weeks.

Prior to coming to Laramie in 2013, Bohl spent a decade at North Dakota State University where he led the Bison to the FCS Playoffs in each of his final four seasons. In Wyoming, Bohl became the first head coach to lead UW to three straight bowl victories — the 2017 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, the 2019 NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl and the 2021 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

The head coach is looking for another winning season this year.  Bohl said this week, that means improving competency on both sides of the football.

On the injury front, running backs Dawaiian McNeely and D.Q. James both participated in the first day of fall camp this week, while Northern Illinois transfer Harrison Waylee did not. Waylee is expected to be sidelined for the first few games of the season while still recovering from knee surgery in the offseason.

McNeely will likely take over the role of UW’s featured back after the post-season departure of Titus Swen last year. McNeely missed extended time last season with nerve damage in his hand, as well as a dislocated collarbone.

The Cowboys will hold 20 practices during fall camp. All are closed to both the public and the media.

The curtain will come up on the 2023 Cowboy Season in Laramie on September 2nd.
