Wyoming’s Congressional Delegation said in separate statements over the weekend that Friday’s indictment of former President Donald Trump is a politicized case designed to derail his re-election campaign.

Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 presidential election, faces over 300 years in jail stemming from 31 counts of “willful retention of national defense information” brought by the Biden Administration’s justice department. The 49-page indictment charges the former president with 37-separate counts. Most are linked to the Espionage Act. Trump, who called the indictment the “Boxes Hoax, is also charged with obstructing the federal government from collecting the documents.

The case marks the first time in the 247-year history of the United States that the Department of Justice has pursued criminal charges against a former president.

Wyoming Congresswoman Harriet Hageman said the charges are “something that third world countries do.” In a statement, Hageman said the charges are an “abuse of federal law,” adding “I hope every American can see this for what it is.”

Senator Cynthia Lummis said the Justice Department shouldn’t be “weaponized to target President Biden’s political opponent.”

Senator John Barrasso, said in a statement, “You can’t but ask why this is happening. It feels political, and it’s rotten.”

Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy blasted the 37-count indictment, saying it shows that justice is unequal under President Biden.

Meanwhile, Trump declared his innocence in a defiant video. The former president declared his innocence and framed the indictment as election interference by a Justice Department “weaponized” by President Biden.

Trump is scheduled appear in court in Miami tomorrow for an initial hearing in the first ever case in which a former US president faces federal criminal charges.
