Fall is approaching. With bear activity on the rise, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department urges residents to reduce potential conflicts by being “bear aware.”
More than a week into September and cooler weather approaching, bears are entering the time of year when they are fattening up for winter. This means that they are layering up with fat reserves for the hibernation season that is not too far off from now. “Meal time” means that bears accustomed to finding food near homes and cabins can quickly become dangerous.
The state game agency recommends that residents:
- Store food, garbage, livestock feed and other tempting edibles in bear-proof containers or secure buildings.
- Confine pets and livestock indoors at night with locked doors and avoid feeding cats and dogs outside.
- Consider electric fencing to protect vegetables, compost piles, fruit trees, and domestic flocks.
Conflicts with bears should be reported immediately to the Game and Fish Department in Laramie: 307-745-4046.
Saratoga Game Warden Connor Worthen can be reached at 421-7678.
The Saratoga District encompasses the east side of the Sierra Madres, the West side of the Snowy Range, and the Platte Valley from the state line to just south of Interstate 80.
Worthen began his duties as a warden in the Laramie Region in July 2023.
Worthen’s phone number again is 307-421-7678.
More information about safety around bears can be found at the Bear Wise Wyoming webpage at the Game and Fish website.
