“Welcome Home Wyoming Veterans” will be the message on Saturday at three celebrations around the state. Governor Mark Gordon plans to attend all three events.

Wyoming Veterans Welcome Home Day became state law in 2011. The original House Bill 177 notes that the U.S. completed the withdrawal of combat troops from Vietnam on March 29, 1973. It goes on to state that many of the returning soldiers “were not properly welcomed and did not receive the thanks of a grateful state and nation.”

Wyoming Welcome Home Day was established to coincide with the anniversary of the troop withdrawal as a way to honor those who served in a controversial war that divided a nation at home.

The first ceremony on Saturday, March 26, begins at 8:30 a.m. in Green River at American Legion Post 28, 38 North Center St.

A ceremony takes place at 11:30 am in Worland at American Legion Post 44, 129 S. 7th St.

The final ceremony of the day will commence at 3 pm in Gillette at the Campbell County Senior Center located at 701 Stocktrail Ave.

Ceremonies were scaled back the last two years because of Covid. Last year, Governor Gordon and Major General Greg Porter, the Adjutant General of Wyoming, appeared via videos in lieu of personal appearances. General Porter offered these thoughts.

The governor and the general will attend all three ceremonies this Saturday. Receiving lines will be formed so Wyoming residents can join the effort to thank our Veterans.

Wyoming communities are also encouraged to host their own celebrations to honor Wyoming Veterans who may not have been thanked for their service or welcomed home.
