In sports, as the Cowboy football season draws closer, middle linebacker Easton Gibbs was voted the preseason Mountain West defensive player of the year by the media. Gibbs earned all-conference, first team honors by racking up 121 tackles.

Gibbs shrugged off the honors, saying he didn’t want to pay attention to the clamor of reporters who cast their votes yesterday at the Circa Resort and Casino on Wednesday.

“Obviously, it’s a cool honor,” Gibbs said. “I’m blessed that people think highly of me this year to vote that, but like I said, kind of just want to keep my head down and keep working.”

Reporters gathered in Las Vegas are only expecting a so-so season for Wyoming. In the media poll released yesterday, the Cowboys were picked to finish sixth in the Mountain West this season.

The Pokes were picked fifth in the Mountain Division in 2022 but finished second behind Boise State. The Broncos, meanwhile, picked up 28 first-place votes, and are the favorite to win the MW championship as the conference begins a new era without divisions.
