Candidate filing ends this Friday.

The deadline to file as a candidate in the 2026 elections is this Friday, May 29th. Speaking to Bigfoot99 and Bandit102 last week, County Clerk Lisa Smith explained that most elected positions in the county will be on this year’s ballot.

A list of registered candidates is available on the Carbon County Clerk’s Office website. As of May 22nd, Travis Moore and John Johnson remain the only declared candidates for county commissioner, and both are seeking reelection. Each of the remaining county offices, including the assessor, attorney, clerk, clerk of district court, coroner, sheriff, and treasurer, still have a single candidate, the incumbent.

Many municipal races lack any candidates. No one has filed to run for mayor or an open council seat in Baggs, Riverside, or Saratoga.

The Dixon mayoral race has no candidates and only Raymond Hauger has filed for town council.

Elk Mountain Mayor Morgan Irene is running again, with Park and Cemetery Board Chairman Brett Larson and sitting council member Craig Mustard seeking council positions.

In Encampment, Carbon County School District Two Recreation Board President Jim McKinney is running for mayor. No one has filed for any of the two open council seats.

Hanna mayor Charlie George is seeking reelection, as is current council member David Felix. Timothy Born is running for a seat on the Hanna town council as well.

Justin George is running again for mayor of Medicine Bow. As of this report, there are no town council candidates.

In Rawlins, council members Bruce Seilaff and Steve Sanger are seeking reelection. Christine Cruz‑Ford is running for the at‑large council seat, currently held by Mayor Jacquelin Wells. No Ward Two candidates have filed at this time.

Sinclair resident Eugene Goetz Jr. has filed for mayor, and Nancy Sanders is running for one of the two open council seats.

At the state level, House District 47 Representative Bob Davis is running for Senator Larry Hicks’s former seat. Baggs rancher Eamon O’Toole is seeking to fill Davis’s place as District 47 representative, and Pam Thayer has filed again to represent House District 15.

To file for county office, a candidate must submit their paperwork to the Carbon County Clerk’s Office with a $100 processing fee. For municipal races, candidates file at their respective town halls and pay $25.

Races without a registered candidate will be filled by write‑in nominees. Under state law, write‑in candidates must receive at least 25 votes and be registered with their associated political party on primary election day. For municipal offices, individuals only need three write-in votes to win. The winning write-in candidate must then formally accept their nomination by filing at the appropriate election office and paying the required fee.

This story will include a link to the county’s website, where filing forms for county, municipal, and special district races are available.

All candidate applications must be submitted to their respective offices before the end of day on Friday, May 29th.

The 2026 primary elections will be held on August 18th.
