The South Higley Boulevard overpass is expected to reopen to traffic before the end of the year.

On July 20th, a semi-truck veered off Interstate 80, striking the four concrete pillars supporting the Higley Boulevard overpass at Exit 214. One of the supports was completely destroyed, while the remaining three sustained varying levels of damage. The driver and co‑driver were reported to have suffered non‑life‑threatening injuries.

Following the crash, traffic was diverted off Interstate 80 at Exit 214 and routed back onto the highway to keep vehicles from passing under the damaged bridge while Wyoming Department of Transportation engineers assessed the structure. It was determined that traffic could safely travel beneath the overpass, but that area of South Higley Boulevard has remained closed since the incident.

On August 27th, WYDOT District 1 Public Relations Specialist Jaxon Penfield announced that the state agency planned to begin seeking contractors to repair the damaged bridge supports in October.

Speaking during Tuesday evening’s Rawlins City Council meeting, City Manager Matt Hall said WYDOT was now expected to start fixing the South Higley Boulevard overpass on October 12th, with the project slated to take roughly two months to complete.

The bridge provides convenient access to a nearby truck stop and the Wyoming State Prison.

Over two and a half months after the incident, Wyoming Highway Patrol has not released the cause of the crash.
