A crash on Thanksgiving Day on Interstate 80 between Cheyenne and Laramie resulted in a 19-car pileup that sent two drivers to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, highway patrol officials report.

One end of a tractor-trailer was ripped from the cab. The truck’s load spilled across the interstate Thursday afternoon, according to Wyoming Highway Patrol Commander Col. Tim Cameron. A displaced engine from another commercial vehicle was laying on the highway when he walked up to the scene near mile marker 324, Cameron added.

The pileup happened at 2 p.m. and caused four more crashes, said Lt. Leo Ferguson with Wyoming Highway Patrol. The pileup spanned three-quarters of a mile and involved mainly commercial vehicles.

The Highway Patrol was busy on Thursday and Friday responding to reports of other crashes. Conditions included low visibility and icy road conditions. By Friday afternoon, Highway Patrol had investigated 86 crashes statewide.

The westbound lanes of I-80 between Happy Jack Road an Laramie were closed due to a crash. An extreme blowover risk remained in effect on I-80 and U.S. 30/287 west of Laramie into Carbon County, which was closed to all light, high-profile vehicle.
