In Rawlins, Mike Lujan was honored with the Community Builder Award for November at last week’s city council meeting.

Lujan owns and operates Mike’s Big City Steakhouse. He also volunteers his time through a host of organizations. The chairman of the committee which selects each month’s honoree, Parks and Recreation Director Jason Sehon read through a lengthy list of ways that Lujan gives back to his hometown.

Lujan feeds the whole community every Thanksgiving at an event that has become a tradition at the restaurant. Last year, over 1,000 people turned out for a traditional Thanksgiving feast, which Lujan hosts for free.

Sehon detailed Lujan’s other contributions.

Lujan is also current board member of St. Joseph’s Council and a past board member of the Boys and Girls Club, Gladiator Boxing, St. Vincent’s and the Chamber of Commerce.

Sehon’s list of Lujan’s accomplishments and contributions went on five minutes.

Lujan was almost in tears as he thanked the governing body for the recognition.

The mayor, council and guests in the chamber gave Lujan a standing ovation as they presented him with the award. The Community Builder Award is presented monthly to local businesses, individuals or organizations for their volunteer service, sponsorship, promotion of programs and events and for other contributions significant to the quality of life in Rawlins.

Lujan’s contributions will continue tomorrow night a free Veterans Day Dinner. Last year, over 150 veterans were served.

Tomorrow’s night presentation will be a big affair that area veterans will not want to miss. The Rawlins Fire Department will make a special presentation. House District 15 Representative Don Burkart, who just received an award from the Wyoming National Guard for his service, will be on hand. Also present will be the Rawlins Middle School and High School Choir and Band who will perform the National Anthem and sing God Bless America.

All veterans are welcome tomorrow night at Michael’s Big City Steakhouse. The event begins at 6 p.m.
