Locally elected officials recognized the 54th anniversary of the National Senior Nutrition Program.

Founded in 1972, the National Senior Nutrition Program began as a federal initiative that provides healthy meals, social connection, and health screenings to adults aged 60 and older.

During Tuesday’s Board of Carbon County Commissioners meeting, Senior Services Executive Director Kelly Morrell asked the Board to sign a proclamation recognizing the program’s 54th anniversary.

Commission Chairman Travis Moore read the proclamation, saying that for the past 54 years, the National Nutrition Program has helped reduce hunger and food insecurity while helping senior citizens maintain their independence.

The proclamation went on to say that the National Senior Nutrition Program has provided food to more than 10 million senior citizens across the country. Continuing to read from the document, Chairman Moore said that last year the Rawlins Senior Center fed nearly 350 residents and hosted activities for more than 390 others.

Following the reading, the Board of Commissioners voted to recognize March 2026 as the 54th anniversary of the National Senior Nutrition Program. Afterward, Chairman Moore thanked Senior Services Executive Director Kelly Morrell for hosting senior‑focused activities.

Later that evening, Morrell presented the same proclamation to the Rawlins City Council. Mayor Jacquelin Wells read the document aloud, acknowledging the program’s role in supporting older residents.

After Mayor Wells finished reading the proclamation, Councilman Steve Sanger asked how to donate to Carbon County Senior Services. Executive Director Morrell said donations can be made directly to the Carbon County Senior Center, adding that an online donation portal is being developed.

The Rawlins City Council thanked Morrell for her contributions to older adults and voted to recognize March as the National Senior Nutrition Program’s 54th anniversary.
