Rawlins Police donated money raised during the National Night Out to St. Christopher’s Highway of Carbon County.

Last Tuesday, August 1st, was the 2023 National Night Out. Considered one of the most important community engagement events of the year, the National Night Out helps build trust, cooperation, and understanding between police and residents. Rawlins Police Chief Mike Ward said August 1st‘s National Night Out was very well attended. Chief Ward said other law enforcement agencies participated in the event.

Chief Ward said Rawlins police officers served hundreds of hamburgers and hotdogs during the National Night Out. The chief said St. Christopher’s Highway of Carbon County were also at the event. Chief Ward said the Rawlins PD has been associated with the charity organization since its inception.

Chief Ward said St. Christopher’s Highway helps people who would typically seek aid from law enforcement or other social assistance organizations. The chief said St. Christopher’s Highway combines the city’s charities under one umbrella, making it easy for travelers to receive the help they need.

Chief Ward is a member of the St. Christopher’s Highway community board of volunteers. The police chief said being associated with the charity benefits him as a law enforcement officer. Chief Ward said he and the various religious groups that make up St. Christopher’s Highway can count on each other to share information.

Chief Ward said the Rawlins Police Department doesn’t ask for donations during National Night Out, but people still chose to contribute money. The chief said the decision was made to give the entire $327.23 raised during the event to St. Christopher’s Highway of Carbon County.

Chief Ward said St. Christopher’s Highway supplements grant money with donations from the community to pay for the food, fuel, and lodging provided to stranded travelers. The police chief said the organization deserved the Rawlins Community Builder Award presented at the last city council meeting.

Chief Ward said a lot of the supplies for the National Night Out are donated by local businesses. The chief said Mike’s Big City Steakhouse donated burgers and hotdogs for the event. Chief Ward said anything that isn’t donated is paid for out of the Rawlins Police Department budget.
