Human remains found in the Pedro Mountains north of Hanna by shed horn hunters may belong to a man missing since 2021.

Yesterday morning, the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying skeletal remains had been found over the weekend. Sheriff Alex Bakken said hikers searching for cast-off antlers stumbled upon the scene.

Sheriff Bakken said the remains belonged to one person and were discovered in a remote section of the Pedro Mountains. The Sheriff said his office checked the remains against a known missing person report.

According to the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation’s missing persons website, 65-year-old John Daily Hammond disappeared in the area where the remains were found. Hammond, from Thermopolis, was last seen on November 5th of 2021 somewhere between Seminoe and Pathfinder Reservoirs.

What Hammond was doing in the area is unknown. The missing man was last seen wearing jeans, a shirt, and a dark gray jacket. The Thermopolis man was reportedly wearing brown suede shoes and a baseball cap.

Sheriff Bakken said a pair of pants found about 25 feet from the body was the only personal item searchers were able to locate.

The remains are now in the care of the Carbon County Coroner’s Office where Coroner Brittany Nyman will attempt to make an identification.
