An unidentified suspect was shot and killed and a Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper seriously injured during a traffic stop outside Lander Friday afternoon.

According to a news release, the trooper and suspect exchanged gunfire moments into the stop on Sinks Canyon Road around 3:30 p.m. Details are still emerging. One report Monday morning stated that the dead suspect was a 24-year-old male. His name was not released.

The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the case, which is standard operating procedure in all WHP officer involved shootings. According to an update released Saturday night, the trooper was released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. The trooper’s name has not been released.
