The Cowboys ran out of miracles inside the Arena Auditorium Tuesday night as they lost a tough one to UNLV in overtime 75-69.

After a lackluster first half, the Cowboys scrapped and clawed their way back in the second half to tie the Running Rebels at 61 as time was running out at the end of regulation.

Wyoming took UNLV to overtime inside the Arena Auditorium Tuesday night, but the Pokes ran out of magic bullets. Down by 10 early on, the Cowboys used the free throw line to tie the game near the end of regulation.  With the clock clicking down, Cael Combs hit two free throws to tie the game from the stripe. A UNLV miscue gave the Cowboys one shot to pull out the win before the extra frame, but it came up short.

Keith Kelly and Kevin McKinney had the heartbreaking call as the Cowboys took the hottest team in the Mountain West to overtime. The Rebels controlled the extra frame, with ten of their 14 points coming at the free throw line.

The Running Rebels have now won eight of nine games to improve to 10-5 in the Mountain West.

The Cowboys, who played their most focused and engaged game in some time last night, have now dropped six of their last seven conference games and find themselves 6-9 in conference play. The big, upset win, just eluded Wyoming.

Head Coach Jeff Linder described his team’s effort as outstanding against the Rebels.

Brendan Wenzel led the Cowboys in scoring with 20 points for his 14th game in double-figures this season and the eighth in his last nine games. Sam Griffin added 13 points for his 22nd game in double figures with Mason Walters adding 12 points for his 13th game in double-figures.

The Cowboys now head south across the border to take on Colorado State Saturday afternoon in a 2 p.m. start.
