The Wyoming Cowboys suffered their third straight loss on Saturday night at Fresno, falling 63-60 in a hard-fought game.
Wyoming got off to a fast start, leading by eight early in the first half. The Bulldogs whittled the lead to one at the break. The two teams battled in the second half, but the Cowboys could not find the basket in the final three minutes.
Leland Walker, who scored 17 points, hit two free throws as time was running out. The senior’s desperation turn-around jump, with less than 20-seconds to go, did not find its mark. With less than eight seconds on the clock, the Cowboys had one last chance at a three pointer.
Keith Kelley and Kevin McKinney had the call on the final play as Wyoming came up short at the end of Saturday night. The Cowboys are no 11-7 overall and 2-5 in the Mountain West.
The Bulldogs took advantage of 27 free throws. The Cowboys only made it to the line twelve times. In a game that was winnable, Wyoming could not find a good look in their last two trips down the floor.
Head Coach Sundance Wicks, always the warrior-philosopher, summed up the loss.
The Cowboys return to action on Tuesday. They hose Boise State in the Arena Auditorium for a 6:30 pm start.
The Broncos come into Laramie with a 2-5 record in conference play, after dealing CSU its third straight loss in five games. The Rams fell on the road at Boise State 79-73 on Friday. CSU has lost five of their last seven games.
Meanwhile, Air Force men’s basketball coach Joe Scott, now in his sixth season, has been suspended indefinitely. The suspension comes as the Air Academy continues with “an investigation into the treatment of cadet-athletes”. The announcement came on Saturday, hours before Air Force lost to Nevada 81-66 in Colorado Springs.
San Diego dominates the Mountain West with a 7-0 conference record. Utah State sits in second place at 6-1.
On a different note, the Cowgirls defeated Air Force 67-44.
