The Wyoming Cowboys closed out the season with a 27-7 loss at Hawaii in a disappointing finale where the offense did not score a point.
The Cowboys’ single score came at the 8:58 mark of the first quarter on a Jones Thomas interception. Thomas, a sophomore safety from Fort Collins, picked off his second pass of the season and ran it in for a touchdown.
Keith Kelly had the call as Wyoming scored first. The Warriors dominated the rest of the way. Hawaii put up 417 yards of total offense—289 passing and 128 rushing. Hawaii quarterback Michah Alejado went 17 of 24 passing for 289 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cowboys collected 256 yards of total offense with 54 on the ground.
At quarterback for Wyoming, the freshman from Gillett Drube, was behind center most of the night. Drube went 17 of 32 for 179 yards with one interception.
Drube replaced Kaden Anderson in the second quarter with the backup remaining behind center the rest of the game.
The backup ran for 48 yards on eight rushes. The freshman’s best drive of the night stalled out at the 30-yard line in Hawaii territory near the end of the second quarter. An Erik Sandvik field goal attempt missed its mark as the Wyoming offense continued to misfire.
For Head Coach Jay Sawvel the season is over. The 4-and-8 finish, 2-6 in Mountain West play, means the job of rebuilding the Cowboys offense has just begun.
For the coach, the work to rebuild has just begun. For the players, 24 Wyoming seniors played their final game for the Cowboys on Saturday.
